I find difficult to answer question 1 because I am so confused which I should choose between No and Not Given (I always in trouble with such question). Could you please give me the way to find out the correct answer for the kind of question?

CORRECT ANSWERS FROM SIMON:

1. NOT GIVEN
"predominantly" (= mainly) is the key word in the question. We know that they are found in all oceans, but we don't know where they are MAINLY found.

2. TRUE
only eat fish = feed exclusively on fish

3. TRUE
may even eat large sharks = preying on even large sharks

4. TRUE
pass on skills to their young = techniques and behaviours... passed across generations

FROM SIMON:

Hi Wei Chen,

I need to check whether they accept "T, F, NG". I think they probably do, but to be safe it's best to write "True, False, Not Given".

...

Hi Jawairia,

It was an experiment to see if children could "wait for something they wanted" (deferred gratification). The marshmallow is a type of sweet. Read more here:

Hi Jael,

I agree that question 1 is difficult. The answer is "not given" when we don't have any information about that exact question. If it's "false" you must be able to shwo that an alternative answer is true.

Hi Simon,

I sincerely appreciate and thank you for your advice.

Best wishes,

Jael.

No problem Jael.

I accidentally found this site and did this True/False/Not Given quiz. Your explanation of why the answers are correct is succinct but excellent. This site is quite helpful. Thank you very much for posting these useful items for future IELTS takers. I love this site!

Dear Simon,

first of all my answers were 1)F 2)T 3)T 4)T
and I check the meaning of "predominantly" it says "mainly, according to the oxford dictionary site, just googled it, but you arent 100% right. The definition and example goes on like this;

Mainly; for the most part.
[SENTENCE ADVERB] ‘it is predominantly a coastal bird’
[AS SUBMODIFIER] ‘predominantly Russian areas’

so due to the oxford dictionary, I say the first answer is "false".

On the other hand, thanks for your co-operation and support. Your site is a wonderful chance for the IELTS students.

best regards,

Serkan,

You seem to be 'over-thinking' this. Does the passage make it clear that killer whales are NOT predominantly found in cold water areas? Does it say where they are predominantly found?

I understand your confusing here, but you need to know how "IELTS logic" works - it always works in a simple way, and if you "over-think", you will probably get the wrong answer.
