Read the following short text, and answer the question below.
The Eiger is a mountain in the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. Since 1935, at least sixty-four climbers have died attempting the Eiger’s north face, earning it the German nickname Mordwand, literally "murder wall" - a pun on its correct title of Nordwand (North Wall). Before it was successfully climbed, in 1938, most of the attempts on the face ended tragically and the Bernese authorities even banned climbing it and threatened to fine any party that should attempt it again. Since the first successful attempt, the north face has been climbed many times, but even today it is regarded as a formidable challenge.
Which TWO of the following statements are true according to the text?
A) The Eiger is the most dangerous mountain in the Bernese Alps.
B) The north face of the mountain has an infamous history.
C) The Nordwand was finally conquered in 1938.
D) The Bernese authorities fined climbers who attempted the north face.
E) Climbers consider the north face to be the world’s most challenging climb.

Hi Simon
I know you have a busy schedule but I have 3 yes/no questions only, I would be grateful if you helped me with
1- when starting a new paragraph, can we skip a line even when we begin the first line of the essay with one word space? or we should continue by starting the paragraph in the next line directly
2- when I completely agree with a certain topic, is it necessary not to mention the against opinion or it is just an option?
3- In the main paragraphs, do I need an example for all my supporting ideas, or one example for the whole paragraph is fairly enough?
Thank you again for your time and your amazing website and book, god bless you

Hi Simon,
I have a question about this statement in a reading passage about diabete:
The rise has been particularly acute in the Pacific Islands with up to
thirty per cent of women in some areas suffering from the condition.
the statement in question is
Nearly a third of people in the Pacific Islands have diabetes.
I considered it False but in answer key it is considered as Not Given.
Idont understand why it is not false?
passage said:
"upto thirty per ent of WOMEN" but in question statement it is said " nearly a third of PEOPLE"
Could you please give me your opinion?

Hi all,
This is my answer and explanation:
B & C is correct.
For A, From the content we can't find the information about "the most dangerous mountain", and there is not any compare details.
For D, it is controversial to the sentence "Bernese authorities even banned climbing it and threatened to fine any party that should attempt it again. "
For E, the error is similar with A, we can't find any compare information for "the world’s most challenging".
Is that correct?

I choose E but I still consider between C and A because I still confuse about "in 1938" in choice C.
Basically, it should write like "Before it was successfully climbed in 1938, most of the ..." (no comma before in 1938). I do not know "in 1938" (with comma before) belong to first sentence or the second sentence.
Posted by: awesome | September 04, 2012 at 05:38
HI Nida,
I can explain about your querry.
The passage says Up to thierty percent of women--- so the passage says only about the women percentage, but the question says one thirs of people means about the people as a whole. so this information is not mentioned at all in the passage. This is the reason that the answer is not given.

Posted by: Shahram | September 04, 2012 at 08:10
My answer is B & C.
B is too obvious.
For C:
Before it was successfully climbed, in 1938,
=re-paraphrase: Until 1938, it was not successful to climb
in = during: it was successfully climbed during 1938.

CORRECT ANSWERS FROM SIMON:
B and C
A is wrong because we don't know whether it's the MOST dangerous - there is no comparison with other mountains
B is correct. Infamous means 'famous for bad reasons' (e.g. the deaths, known as "murder wall" etc.)
C is correct - it was successfully climbed in 1938
D is wrong because we only know that they 'threatened' to fine people.
E is wrong - similar to 'A' - there is no comparison with other mountains.
I hope you liked the exercise!
...
I'm sorry I can't answer other individual questions. I'll try to answer some of them in Saturday's lesson.

Climate change sceptics might not like to admit it, but Asia is embracing environmentally-friendly technologies.
China is spending tens of billions of dollars every year on renewable energy projects - almost twice the next biggest spender in this field, the US - while South Korea's clean energy capacity more than tripled in 2009.
Future built on wood from waste
Augmented reality goes beyond gimmicks

Tech upstarts reveal flaws in health IT
Asia is not, then, the environmental laggard some in the West would have us believe.
In fact, growth in what the industry calls the clean tech, or environmental technology, sector looks set to take off.
The figures speak for themselves.
The population of Asia is expected to grow at more than double the rate of Europe and the US in the next five years, during which time the region's economy should grow four times more quickly than Europe's, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
This helps to explain why demand for energy in Southeast Asia should rise by 76% in the next 20 years, the IMF says.
And an increasing proportion of this energy will come from clean technologies - governments and indeed peoples demand it.

Clean tech lures investors to Asia
"Asia is really interested in the environment - you just have to look at China's latest five-year economic plan [which commits to stringent renewable energy targets, among others] as well as the tremendous demand from people due to pollution," says Vivek Tandon, co-founder of Aloe Private Equity, an investment group specialising in Asian clean tech.
In fact there are three major drivers behind the push for green technologies in Asia, according to Johanna Klein, investment officer at the Asian Development Bank: energy security, environmental degradation and, perhaps most importantly, the need for new industries to create new jobs.
Pleasw teel which two sentences are true from this passage.
1-Many companies are looking how to best recycle the waste?
2- Asia is using the technologoes known to be environmentally safer and cleaner.
3-The population is expected to grow in the years to come.
4-In Asia, three main features results from the impletattionof green technology.
