One of the questions in Cambridge IELTS book 8 asks who should be responsible for making children into good citizens: parents or schools?
Here's a paragraph I wrote about this topic:
Parents play a huge ______ in their children’s lives, and shoulder more of the ______ for their upbringing than school teachers do. Before starting school, infants spend the first four or five years of their lives with their mothers and fathers. During those ______ years, parents teach their children vital skills and habits, such as the ability to speak, eat and behave. Parents are the major role ______ for young people, who copy the behaviour that they see on a daily ______ at home, and it would be wrong to expect schools to ______ a greater influence than the family.

Hi! Simon what is cyber technology???
I have found one essay question and its very difficul for me. Could you help me with your ideas??
Question:
With a advancement of cyber technology, electronic data and wireless communication have blossomed. This has led to increase in online gambling and illegal wagering. Explein the possible causes that have contributed to this trend and their consequences. Provide ways in which we can eradicate these illegal operations.
Posted by: Farukhbek | November 23, 2012 at 07:22
Dear Farukhbek, although I am not Simon but perhaps you could take something from what I wrote about cyber technology in my explanation and in my essay on your question.
Cyber - an adjective used to describe anything related to computers
Cyber technology - (digital technology) it does mean computer, science technology that involves the internet or cyber side.
Cyber refers to the mass of computers and networks that form an information technology infrastructure where users are anonymous to each other.
Essay:
Cyber technology has brought so many possibilities for humans to use. However, some of these gains seem to be at least controversial, if not a serious threat. One of the problem is worldwide spread of gambling and wagering online. Considering this, two questions arise - should this even be allowed, and, if yes what should be done to stop its illegal forms.
To start with, there are many reasons why the different types of gambling online are so ubiquitous. Some people always liked to play games, take risks to earn easy money without hard work, looking for thrill. So, gambling is still being practising in many forms. However, easy access to the internet, via computer or wireless connections such as smart phones, mobiles makes it much easier to perform with no need to go out. On the other hand, some people use these possibilities to make their profits. Thus, the numerous private gambling companies, with permission or not, created their websites and activities like poker, casinos, sport betting, bingo, horse racing betting, wagering in play. Even, governments as to outweigh their influences have built their own systems such as National Lotteries.
Consequences? Apart from a doubtful and short lasting pleasure, it is players ’waste of money and time while the profits go to organisers. Their income is enormous, counted in billions of pounds, and especially illegal companies may be unscrupulous. Conversely, our real chance to become a millionaire by the win is an extraordinary small, and psychological and social consequences for serious gamblers are the same like in other addictions.
Unfortunately, the trials to ban totally gambling online by the law acts have been proved to be unsuccessful, for example, in America. In EU there is no yet one clear and homogenous rule. Thus, probably it would be a better idea to accept some forms of gambling, controlled by governments or giving the rights to lead some activities by honest companies with the systems of special licences. Of course, those who do not keep standards of safe and fair play, doing it illegally should be banned with serious fines or being sent to prisons. There should be no advertisements and no encouragement, especially for children. Technically and practically cyber technology themselves may also introduce some protective methods with coded information and blocked access.
In conclusion, there are many reasons for gambling online development with its impacts. However, there are some measures that could be implemented to reduce the scale of the phenomenon, especially in their illegal form.

SAMPLE ANSWER from Ielts book 8 page 163. (263 words)
A child's education has never been about learning information and basic skills only. It has always included teaching the next generation how to be good members of society. Therefore, this cannot be the responsibility of the parents alone.
In order to be a good member of any society the individual must respect and obey rules of their community and share their values. Educating children to understand the need to obey rules and respect others always begins in the home and is widely thought to be the responsibility of parents. They will certainly be the first to help children learn what is important in life, how they are expected to behave and what role they will play in their world.
However learning to understand and share the value system of a whole society cannot be achieved just in the home. Once a child goes to school, they are entering a wider community where teachers and peers will have just as much influence as their parents do at home. At school children will experience working and living with people from a whole variety of backgrounds from the wider society. This experience should teach them how to co-operate with each other and how to contribute to the life of their community.
In conclusion, to be a valuable member of any community is not like learning a simple skill. It is something that an individual goes on learning throughout life and it is the responsibility of every member of a society to take responsibility for helping the younger generation to become active and able members of that society.

Dear Simon, can you correct my essay please?
Question - some people think that parents should teach how to be good members in society. Others however believe that school is the best place to learn it. Discuss both view and give your opinion?
Today's children become tomorrow's citizens. Some people would claim that children should learn how to be a good member in society by their parents, while others argue that school is responsible for it.however, in this essay I shall discuss both these views and will give my opinion.
On the one hand, it is true that home is the first institution where parents are the primary teachers for a child. The reason why Iam saying like this, because from the time of birth children are with their parents. They will try to immitate their parents for everything. For example, psychology says that when a child born,he or she starts to achieve something from their surroundings. So,during this period of time, parents can help them to develop a moral life.
On the other hand, children can learn many things from school as it is their second destination for learning. In school they are focussing more on subjects than moral values.Because,it is pivotal in a society that in order to get a good job with high salary, children should be educated. No matter where they studied or how they studied ,Society will ask about their money and power. Even no matter how they are leading their life in an exemplary way or not.Politicians are case in point. Although it is true, school is having an another role in children morel development. Even though parents are training them, completion of this task is occurring only in school rather than any other place.
In conclusion, parents and school are having an inevitable role in moulding a man.Though parents are the first teachers for a child, I believe that this task would not complete without school; as both of them have their own responsibility.

Dear Simon,
I saw the essay on Cambridge8:
Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this.
I wrote an essay and then looked up the model answer provided by Cambridge 8, but found it not as good as the paragraph you have posted online.
Since you have only written one paragraph about parents, but I cannot find the other paragraph related with school and I don't know how to write the school part.
So Could you please provide a full essay on this topic for reference? Thanks a lot!
