Read the following text and answer true, false or not given.
Coffee consumption has been shown to have minimal or no impact, positive or negative, on cancer development. However, researchers involved in an ongoing 22-year study by the Harvard School of Public Health state that "the overall balance of risks and benefits [of coffee consumption] are on the side of benefits."
Other studies suggest coffee consumption reduces the risk of being affected by Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout. A longitudinal study in 2009 showed that those who consumed a moderate amount of coffee or tea (3–5 cups per day) at midlife were less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease in late-life compared with those who drank little coffee or avoided it altogether.
- Scientists have linked coffee consumption to accelerated cancer development.
- Some scientists believe that the benefits of drinking coffee outweigh the drawbacks.
- Recent research links coffee consumption with a reduced risk of some illnesses.

1. FALSE

2. TRUE

Hi Pearl, I think at least cofee consumption has minimal or positive impact on cancer development, namely it means that if we consume cofee on a daily basis or more , it automatically leads to acceleration of cancer.. and sentence in the passage also involves this sentence (Scientists have linked coffee consumption to accelerated cancer development)
Posted by: orxan | March 11, 2014 at 18:06
Pearl, first I also thought that correct answer should be ..not given.. but then when thinking a bit more deeply we would get ..true... answer. On the other hand as you know cofee consumption is not only factor on cancer development, namely this factor causes growth of cancer along with effects of other factors as well...

Hi Simon,
To be honest, I don't agree with the first answer because the question is
"1. Scientists have linked coffee consumption to accelerated cancer development."
The related sentence from the passage is
"Coffee consumption has been shown to have minimal or no impact, positive or negative, on cancer development." - this doesn't mean that there are evidences from scientists. In other words, it's unclear who claimed that coffee is not dangerous.
Therefore, my answer is NOT GIVEN.
