When writing a main body paragraph for task 2, I recommend aiming for five sentences.
Read the following 5-sentence paragraph. The essay question was: When choosing a job, the salary is the most important consideration. Do you agree or disagree?
On the one hand, I agree that money is necessary in order for people to meet their basic needs. For example, we all need money to pay for housing, food, bills, health care, and education. Most people consider it a priority to at least earn a salary that allows them to cover these needs and have a reasonable quality of life. If people chose their jobs based on enjoyment or other non-financial factors, they might find it difficult to support themselves. Artists and musicians, for instance, are known for choosing a career path that they love, but that does not always provide them with enough money to live comfortably and raise a family.
Tasks:
- Analyse the 5 sentences in the paragraph. What does each one do?
- Try writing your own 5-sentence paragraph about the following opinion: "When choosing a job, other factors are just as important as money."
Here are my opinions:)
On the one hand, I agree that money is necessary in order for people to meet their basic needs. -->Topic sentence
For example, we all need money to pay for housing, food, bills, health care, and education. -->Example
Most people consider it a priority to at least earn a salary that allows them to cover these needs and have a reasonable quality of life. -->Firstly(Why money is necessary)

Undoubtedly job selection is a pretty hard task for a person because of a number of factors such as domestic, social and personal as well. One of the reason why is this so is job security and most probably remains on top in this list. Moreover area of interest and flexibility in timing are also as important as above mentioned reason.A reasonable percentage of people reject highly paid positions just because of more than usual working hours and interferance in their personal life.On the other hand people with dogged determination and sky touching ambitions dnt bother these reason because power is taken as success by them and they remained prepared to loose their personal interests at cost of their dreams.

Hi Simon, here is my paragraph.
On the other hand, I would argue that family is another important factor in choosing a job.(1) When people are choosing their jobs, they often consider their parents, partners or children because family life is vital for everyone. (2) For example, some people who want to be home in the evenings with their children might choose a career where you are not always on call or have to travel often.(3) They may even want to start their own business so that they eventually can have the flexibility to take days off when they want to.(4) That is to say, they consequently have the flexibility to homeschool their children. (5)

In fact, I couldn't understand the five sentences referred in your lesson well. Could you plase explain them fully in your next lesson? Thanks in advance.

topic sentence: I agree that money is necessary in order for people to meet their basic needs.
Firstly, we all need money to pay for housing, food, bills, health care, and education.
Secondly, most people consider it a priority to at least earn a salary that allows them to cover these needs and have a reasonable quality of life.
Finally, if people choose their jobs based on enjoyment or other non-financial factors, they might find it difficult to support themselves.
Example: Artists and musicians.

Thank Simon, a very useful lesson.
----
I have several questions and I really appreciate your help
1.I have trouble with this question
“popular events like the Football World Cup and another international sporting occasions are essential in easing international tensions and releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?” (Cambridge 3)
Can I disagree with “easing international tensions” and agree with “releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way”?
2.If the question is “Do you agrer or disagree”, can I take a balanced stand “I partly agree”?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I feel this paragraph is not exactly the 5 sentence structure you mentioned.

When choosing a job, other factors are just as important as money
(1) On the other hand, it is also essential to consider the workplace location and job prospect when selecting jobs.(2)The amount of time commuters spent on the road can directly affect their satisfactions towards works. (3) For example, people are more likely to feel tired and bored when they spend more than one hour on traveling to work, which reduces their job satisfactions.(4)In addition, a job without good prospect can constrain people from further improvements. (5) For example, people will lose motivations to work harder in an organization where they can not see any promotion opportunities.

FROM SIMON:
I've removed the part of the lesson that mentioned "Topic sentence, Firstly, Example, Secondly, Finally" because I think it was confusing some people.
The paragraph in the lesson above is not a "Firstly, Secondly, Finally" one.
I'll give you my explanation here in the comments area tomorrow.

Analysis of para
1st sentence:topic sentence (basic needs,keyword)
2nd :explanation with example (housing, food, etc=basic needs)
3rd :another explanation (reasonable quality of life)
4th :support of main idea with discussion on other side of argument( negative of non financial factors)
5th :example of that explanation( artist and musicians....)

On the other hand,I also agree with the fact that job selection is highly based on other factors along with satisfactory salary. Firstly, job satisfaction is the most important factor in choosing a career. For instance, if the employee is not satisfied with its work then it will be not working interestingly. As a result, the turn over will be increased which even a handsome salary can not prevent. In addition, working environment is the second major factor in selecting a best job.As peaceful, stress free and friendly atmosphere in workplace is largely dependent on long term job.Consequently, workers will be happy with their job as well as performance.

(Secondly) have a reasonable quality of life.
(Finally) If people chose their jobs based on enjoyment or other non-financial factors, they might find it difficult to support themselves.
(Example2) Artists and musicians, for instance, are known for choosing a career path that they love, but that does not always provide them with enough money to live comfortably and raise a family.

Nice to see your blog is working now, as yesterday I was in the state of confusing and disorientation which can be called "Withdrawal".
It is good that you mentioned in your last posting on this page that you removed the "firstly, example, secondly and finally" part. Otherwise, I would think that really something is wrong with me, because I was sure that I saw these stuff here but in the next moment there were nothing there. .

And my 5 sentences paragraph but in 4 sentences:
Put money aside, the interest for a job is an important factor for choosing a profession. We need to enjoy our time while we are in our workplace, as this desire / gladness can help us to boost our performances. Evidences from various studies have proven that those who do not like their job have more difficulty adopting the environment where they are working in and have more absences due to a variety of reasons. In contrast, those who are more interested on their working do not even feel the passing of time and have a better output.

>topic sentence
For example, we all need money to pay for housing, food, bills, health care, and education.
>example

>firstly

>secondly
Artists and musicians, for instance, are known for choosing a career path that they love, but that does not always provide them with enough money to live comfortably and raise a family.

My own paragraph:
It is reasonable to consider other factors besides money in terms of working. Satisfaction for working plays a rital role in one’s occupational life and is a factor involving productivity. For example, those who are fully satisfactory with their works are more likely paying great attention on works, which makes a positive effect for their companies. Besides, interest is another factor cannot be forgotten. People with great interest in their careers may bring the company many good ideas which probably motivates the company to advance and to be more competitive than counterparts.

I believe that there are other areas to be considered as equally relevant to money. For instance, many people also take into account the location of the office and how accessible it is to public transportation. People are usually cautious in spending most of their time in travelling to their respective offices. In my experience, I turned down a job offer with a better pay for another job that would only take me 5 minutes to get to the office. If money is the only issue, then there should be a decease in the unemployment rate of the country.
Posted by: Sheila | April 23, 2014 at 16:14
My answer to your questions:
First question:
1. topic sentence (money is necessary for basic needs)
2. example (need money to pay for housing, food, bills, health care, and education.)
3. other explanation (have a reasonable quality of life.)
4. contrast with money (based on enjoyment or other non-financial factors) and give result (find it difficult to support themselves.)
5. example of people who choose other factors rather than money (Artists and musicians)
Second question:
On the other hand, I believe that other factors should be given equal importance when applying for a job. First, for some individuals who are not under pressure of financial difficulties, they tend to choose a company which has a rich variety of working benefits such as the number of day leave, team building, trainning system. For example, many people in Viet Nam still think XXX is a professional environment people should join, although the salary range is quite low. Secondly, promotion opportunities is also the important factor when choosing a job because employees can reach higher position in a short time if they can prove their performance. Finally, having an opportunity to work with friendly and professional experts is an option to acquire valuable knowledge and experience, which is a huge advantage for employees in the future.
Posted by: Hai Le | April 23, 2014 at 16:21
On the other hand, while selecting job, not only the money other factors are equally considerable. For instances, friendly working (stress), benefits and long terms objectives should also be keep in mind. It is absolute important to work in a friendly team without worries it will increases the productivity and creates the progressive environment. Also, long term companies benefits now a day’s outweigh the salary alone. For example in case of family member sickness or hospitalization it will cost a lot of money. Finally, the employee objective is to get higher position in same company after a certain period of time which will boost the income as well as status of individual.

Topic sentence- example- supporting idea ( make the first sentence clearer ) - give idea showing the contrast to the first sentence to stress on the importance of money – give example to illustrate
This is my paragraph , but it is logical . Could you help me correct the mistakes? Thanks
On the other hand, It is true that other factors should be taken into account when applying for a job. In reality, some well- paying job could not ensure the employees safe working environments and even put their lives at risk. Take coal miners as a typical example, due to working underground, they may either be critically injured or killed if a mine collapse happens. A high - salary job brings one a comfortable life , but not health and longevity. therefore , job safety must be in line with money

On the one hand, I agree that money is necessary in order for people to meet their basic needs. - topic sentence
For example, we all need money to pay for housing, food, bills, health care, and education. - Example
Most people consider it a priority to at least earn a salary that allows them to cover these needs and have a reasonable quality of life. - more explanation
If people chose their jobs based on enjoyment or other non-financial factors, they might find it difficult to support themselves. - alternative
Artists and musicians, for instance, are known for choosing a career path that they love, but that does not always provide them with enough money to live comfortably and raise a family. - example
At the same time, there are other important elements when choosing a job such as fulfilling mind. For instance, some of people prefer to get confident and challenge during the work. Moreover, those push them to encourage their motivate of executing the assignment. If people only work for money, they will become cold blood people and loss passion on job as well. Some of my colleagues, for example, are got the position due to payment, but they are not really interested in that job.

Hello Simon!
Here is my example
1. Many of us try to find work that cover all of our wishes and let feel ourselves comfortably during working hours.
2. In spite of a big industrialization last century, many companies are still demand hand labor and it means that not all of work has comfortable conditions nowadays.
3. Therefore, people try to find job with some conveniences such as air-conditioner, windows, places for relax in theirs free-time and social guaranties to prevent possible occurring some professional diseases. 4. In spite of it some workers applying for a job with hard working conditions to get more money.
5. They are ready even for relocation during some months far away from their family.
Posted by: Sergey | April 23, 2014 at 18:21
1-After the topic sentence, each sentence seems to explain the previous one.
2- Several other factors besides money should be taken into account when choosing a job. Firstly, the length of working hours and number of day off work can greatly affect an individual's personal as well as family life , as longer worker hours and less holidays mean less time available to pursue one's own pleasures or hobbies and not be able to spend sufficient time with the family. Secondly, it is worth to consider how much time a person would spend commuting because it can influence mental and physical
health. For example, some studies have shown that people who made long journeys to work they suffered from, fatigability, neck pain, and poor concentration at work. Finally, the prospects a job offers to learn new skills is of fundamental importance. For instance, it has been seen that companies who regularly compel their workers to acquire new skills or training they not only excel in productivity but their employees enjoy their work by learning new skills. Furthermore, the jobs offering educational opportunities and forcing employees to do challenging tasks keep them motivated and escape them from monotony of work.
( it's a 5- sentence paragraph or a 15- sentence paragraph ..couldn't figure it out 😳)

Alongwith money there are many factors to be considered before select a job . Firstly location of the compnay and its distance from residential place.for instance, long distance waste one's valuable time through travel. many people prefer to live with the family so they should get time to spend with family.secondly, peaceful working atmosphere and finally the growth of the company or the institution. These all factors are important to get job satisfaction.

Hi Simon
Can you please post an example of a full essay for the topic "When choosing a job, the salary is the most important consideration"
As every time when I face the disagree or agree topic, I always wasn't sure do I write one paragraph in disagreement and the second one in agreement.. Or I should go for agreement on both paragraphs....
And if I strongly agree with the topic given and I do two paragraphs in agreement, how do we write it. It will be difficult to put enough ideas in just one...
Thank you

In addition to money, chosen career must also provide one with happiness and job satisfaction. For instance, any job that's often done very well usually involves maximum involvement while performing the work. Most people, in the first place, are likely to have chosen their career pathway because it gives them fulfillment while practicing. If people choose jobs according to money, eventually they will be completely dissatisfied not only with the job but also with their life. A good illustration of this is seen with doctors deciding to pursue their career for money can indeed earn enough money to live decent life but with out personal involvement and job satisfaction they will only end up regretting their chosen career.
Posted by: Tash | April 24, 2014 at 09:29
This is my practice 5 sentence..
Please criticize as hard as you can as I know it is not perfect.....
On the other hand, I agree that other criteria should be given as much as importance as money when choosing a job. For example, flexibility of work time is essential for people especially for those who have family and children. Some people even consider that flexibility of time is more important than salary when choosing a job. A great flexibility of time allows parents to take care of family and maintain the quality of life. If people take money as the priority of choosing jobs, they might find themselves spending all their lives on working. For example, parents who work all the time will miss some great moments of the childhood of their children, and this will have a negative impact on the path of children's growth.
Thank you

1.introducing the paragraph's subject(money is important) and stating personal view (agree both sides)
2.giving an example
3.explaining
4.explaining
5.introduction to the opponent view and probably next paragraph
My paragraph:
On the other hand, I also agree with the view that there are other factors equally important as income. For example, self realisation is one of the reason why some people chose art or music as a career. These people would consider the monetary forms of income as secondary benefits of doing what they love and would be more productive or satisfied with their job and life by earning recognition for their work, such as applause or a award rather than a bank cheque.Jobs or career paths which do not generate regular income would still be on demand due to satisfying people's different expectations and meeting other priorities.
Posted by: minibluebag | April 24, 2014 at 14:35
it's my view,please correct this
On the other hand, money is important to fulfill necessities in life, but it is not everything. There are many other factors that influence in choosing a career. One factor is job satisfaction, for instance people cannot work when they don’t have interest in it, thereby it leads to decline in their productivity. Another factor is working hours, lot of people cannot sustain for longer hours due to stress, sometimes it kills quality time which can they spend with family. In addition to this, some people love to persue their interst as profession such as musicians, artists love to be in their respective careers.Sometimes distance also play a role in choosing a job as they don’t prefer to leave their family and work in other location, even it is paying a handsome salary.
Posted by: ishu | April 24, 2014 at 16:10
1. Topic Sentence, up side of the salary importance
2. Example
3. Fact (as another example or result)
4. Topic Sentence, disadvantage of not taking money as 1st priority
5. Example in form of a fact
It is true that the salary is an important determinant when we are looking for a job; nevertheless, other factors should be taken into careful consideration as well, namely the working environment. A good working environment will allow us to improve ourselves by gaining more knowledge and experience, developing our skills, especially for young graduates. As the matter of fact, many companies, nowadays, are making their working places better by introducing formal corporate culture and creating a comfortable working area. On the other hand, people who care only about salaries may have a high income but often end up with mental health problems. For instance, multinationals employees are likely to get stress more often due to the pressure from their work such as high volume of work with strict deadlines and they also have little time to take care of themselves physically and mentally.
Please point out any mistake of my writing for me.
Thanks

Hi Simon. Here is my 5-sentence paragraph:
On the other hand, there are many other factors involved in job selection. After graduation, students, for example, are usually willing to choose a career that is related to their favourite subject in university. This is not only because it ensures a good performance at work, but also due to their job satisfaction. It is true to say that satisfaction in the workplace might be the first priority for many people when making a career decesion. In contract, if the sole consideration of a job hunter is to be handsomely paid, they might find their high-paying job boring and time-consuming. To use a telling example, a executive director with a high salary and tight working schedules is not likely to spend much time on both entertainment and his family, which will definitely make him feel unconfortable even if he is albe is make good money to support his family.

1.while deciding on the job, beside considering the amount of money to be earn, the type of different tasks should also be important to interpret.
2.To perform the jobs related to the individual's profession could be much easier than non-professional ones.
3Additionally,paying attention towards the type such as day , evening or night as well as the length of shift is also as vital as salary.
4To illustrate, the night shift might adversely effects someone's health ,family and social life due to the compulsion of sleeping during the day which left the person with less time to spend time with friends and family.
5. Many people like to have their workplace at a stones throw which enables them to save valuable time and the expense of commuting from home to work and vice versa.

Hi Simon, I want to thank you because your blog helped me a lot when I was preparing the exam. I got a 7,5 overall score with no band below 7,0 in my first attempt. But I have a question. Before I got the results, I signed up again for the test, in case that I was 0,5 or 1 point below the score that I needed. Here in my country is difficult to find a place in the test, so If I waited for the results, maybe I wouldn't find a place until June or July (if I had to sign up again). Also, they cannot refund my money. So my question is: If I don't take the exam again, I will get a score of band 0. It is harmful for my first score? The second score (band 0) replace the first score? How it works?
Thank so much again.
Best Regards.

Is going abroad good or bad?Give your opinion.
There has been a growing number of people embarking foreign countries either to settle permanently there or study or even work. This trends have brought many problems to the developing countries such as India and Brazil. From my point view, we should immediately prevent this situation for economic and social reasons.
To begin with, the most considerable reason is going abroad for work or study brings detrimental affects in national economy. When students take a admission, they are obliged to pay a large amount of money to foreign universities. It leaves financial burden to their parents and also effects on national GDP. If student study their own country, not only do they pay a small amount of money to local university but also save a lot of money, and they can use this money to other productive business. Therefore, going overseas for different purpose is not good from the economic point of view of the country.
Another important reason is that it creates social unrest in the society. Many young people study in international multicultural university, with they forgetting their own cultures and languages. Consequently, when they return their home country, they might not be able to adjust with their local custom and it may brings conflict within the family. For instance, if students study in English-spoken counties for a long time, they might forget their local language. After coming their own country, they might fill difficulty to deal with local people. This issue can be avoided by studying in their home country.
In conclusion, even though, there are some positive side of going foreign nations,I strongly believe that we immediately stop this because it may strain our local economy and destroy social harmony.
Can anybody assess this essay please.

It is true that money is an important factor in choosing a job however, there are other factors which are equally important as the money. For example, some people consider their safety when choosing a job as there are jobs which can be dangerous and can present health risks. There are also some who prioritize the flexibility of schedule they get in choosing a job especially for those who have family and kids. There is so much to consider in choosing a job and it really varies from person to person. If people only think about the amount of salary in choosing a job then certainly, it will not be long enough that they will be facing some dilemmas in carrying out their civil and personal responsibilities.

On the other hand, there are several other factors as important as money that influence our decision when choosing a job. Firstly, the workplace environment can have an enormous effect on people. For example, it is important for an individual to know that he can rely on his partners of work or that he has the freedom to speak up whenever it is necessary. Another factor that might be taken into consideration is the flexibility offered by a certain job. For instance, people need to know they can benefit of their superiors tolerance and time is allocated to them to solve their personal life attributes.

On the other hand, the need to have a job that can generate fulfilling job satisfaction is paramount to a lot of people. Given that most workers are dedicating a significant portion of their time in work, the nature of the job and the work-derived contentment plays an important role in maintaining the employees motivation. Employees might very quickly find themselves in the state of questioning the reasons for staying if they are unhappy with their job content. Furthermore, the work-life balance should also be taken into account while job hunting. It is not uncommon to see successful figures that have exceptional achievements in their careers but have serious health concerns or fragile relationship with families because of the insufficient time devoted to themselves and love ones.

4. Conclusion:
Full essay:
Many people argued that how much they could receive for a job is the most important when they accept a job offer. While I accept that salary is one of considerable factors when choosing job, however, I disagree with the idea that pay is the ultimate one.
Most of people work for earning money in order to pay their bills that are from essential goods and services such as healthcare, house rent, meal to luxury ones like travel, cosmetics . With higher pay earned, they could have better living quality as their current expenses are well financed and they also could keep aside a portion for future need as a save. Furthermore, in our materialistic world, it usually measures individual capacity at work by looking at earning amount. It is usually understood that the higher earn the better talented a job taker is.
If job hunters just only took consideration salary as the only factor for choosing a job, it might ruin their carrier path that is the best fit in long term. Everyone has unique personalities and these characters make them suitable for doing specific professions. For example, a very emotional person could not be a successful lawyer, which requires job holder to have a tough skin as they are operating in highly emotional charged industry. Additionally, I believe that nobody was trained to handle all jobs: each individual is good at some skills that make that person capable of related job. As a consequence, Job takers are unable to deliver good results as it is required, that people will face stress and sooner or later he will look for other jobs fitting his characters and education.
In conclusion, salary is an important factor but in my opinion it is not the only one to consider when choosing a job.

on one hand, it is agreed that money is a necessity for fulfilling family needs. Every one needs money for food, shelter, children education and so on. To lead a happy and peaceful life money plays a major role in every one's life. if people does jobs for a hobby or enjoyment then it becomes difficult even to meet the basic needs for a living. There are many people who choose careers like painting, music, social service where they cannot make enough money to live a comfortable life and meet their family needs.

Is this too informal?
"Who does not want a fat paycheck? Everyone does! After all, we work because we need money in order for us to support ourselves and our families. Nevertheless, in choosing a career, other factors are as crucial as the salary. In fact, in terms of job satisfaction, the salary is just the tip of the iceberg."

I don't recommend asking questions in your essay Glenn. "fat paycheck" is also too informal for the writing test.

My answer:
However, apart from a decent salary, other factors like career opportunity, future prospective of the industry, compensation packages or even the daily commute time are equally important when considering a job offer. Career path for example, is something that can offer an individual a long time development in the future, and the fortune it potentially to bring along with might be untold in a long run. So it might be a wise choice to accept a job offer with a reasonable salary but offering a recognizable career path. The perspective of an industry or a company also matters, since it could be dangerous to step into a sunset industry or a company whose profitability is weakening in the trend. Besides that, compensation packages, pressure of the job, working-life balance and inter-personal relationships and more, are also worthy of taking into consideration, because they could more or less affect many aspects of your lives.

On the oter hand, factors other than money may just be as important. For instance, the sense of achievement one attains from work is particularly valuable for many people. They also consider that firstly, one must be able to love their work for it to be less strenuous and at the same time rewarding. For instance, a music writer writes music leisurely and all the same earn from it. In this case, remuneration becomes a bonus to a well-loved, nurtured hobby.

Whether people have great interest in what they do should be taken into consideration. People who love their job tend to put more efforts and hours on work and still keep a positive attitude. Many movie directors, for instance, hold enormous passion for films and thus continually make sensational and excellent movies no matter how tough the shooting process is. Great passion spurs great motivation, and therefore improvement and creation. People who don't choose the job in which they are engaged, however, may not work enthusiastically and even feel that they are getting a ransom for the hostage of their freedom and leisure time. As a result, they often work ineffectively and have a higher tendency to quit the job.
