****“It goes without saying" means "it is self- evident”. I am not sure if this is proper words for this sentence, as well as expression of “to be passionate about bedroom”. I would like to see what Simon is going to say.

Dear Simon,

I am very much delighted to share my score that I received today. This made my dream true to do PhD in my desired field.

L-8
R-7
W-7
S-7
Overall-7.5

I used to feel these numbers are exclusive for people who already had strong command on english and it is hypothetical thought to expect this band score for me. And proving this I failed to cross 6.5 band in my four previous attempts where I always used to fail in writing section. I am truly grateful to you for providing this wonderful website and your dedication to teach students, like me, with no basic skills in english.

Sincerely,

VIJAY.

Hi everyone
today was my test writing Question was many customs n traditional ways of behaviour r irrelevant in modern way of life and not worth of keeping . Do u agree or disagree?

ANSWERS FROM SIMON

First, these are the problems:

1. The use of 'arrange' doesn't follow the grammar of the first part of the sentence, so we'll need to make it match e.g. "walls to be painted.... furniture to be arranged"

2. The first half of the conditional (if I am) is wrong, and we don't say "much more bigger".

3. The second half of the conditional (I will buy) is wrong.

4. We shouldn't use the past "I spent".

5. No grammar mistakes, but "it goes without saying" seems strange and inappropriate here - why does it go without saying?

FROM SIMON (continued)

Here are my suggestions:

1. I would want the walls to be painted in bright colors, and the furniture to be arranged by some good interior designers.

2. If I were well off, I would move into a much bigger house.

3. If I had enough money, I would buy some more household appliances.

4. My favourite room is my living room because I spend most of my time there.

5. I love my bedroom; it's definitely my favourite room.

Hi Simon,
In number 2 sentence why did you write much to modify bigger? We have already compared 2 houses and we used bigger. According to rules we know big has both comparative and superlative forms. We don't use much or more before comparative or superlative adjective. Is that an exception? I looked for it but can't find answer. I hope you will explain it in your upcoming lessons. Thanks

Dear All

I try to make paraphrase for some of the sentences, can anyone give an advice, do the sentences sound natural or not.

1. I like to have the walls painted with bright colors and the furniture’s are arranged with artistic interior design.
2. If I have more money, I like to move to a larger property.
3. If I had extra budget, I would like to purchase additional home appliances
4. My favorite room is the living room because I spent a lot of time in that room.
5. You can see through my expression, that I have big passionate for my bedroom.

Thanks

Hi Pearl,

You've got part of the rule wrong I'm afraid. We DO use "much + comparative". For example: "He is much taller than me." It's very normal to say "much bigger" - try googling it to see more examples.

Thanks Simon I'll Google it.

1. I would want the walls to be painted in bright colors and arrange the furniture with some good interior designs.
2. If I were well off, I would like to move into a much bigger house.
3.If I had enough money, I would buy many more household appliances.
4. My favourite room is my living room because I mostly spend time ( most of time )in that room.
5. It goes without saying that I am quite passionate about my bedroom.
