Thank you Simon, for your advice.
As it has been told, I think the practical way to understand a new vocabulary is by searching how it used i.e. in media. The easiest way is by looking in google using "....". Here is an example for "resort to" result: Hong Kong police resort to tear gas to break up democracy protesters

I see my weakness in IELTS writing and speaking, and so I resort to 1 on 1 tutoring for improving my language skills particularly in these two fields.

I have to resort to cancelling the trip because my son gets ill.
