Read the following passage, and choose the best title from the list.
Using a laser scan of Bourges cathedral in France, a team led by John Ochsendorf of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have 3D-printed thousands of bricks and are building an exact 1:50 replica. The researchers hope to use the mock-up to devise a way to gauge the stability, and thus safety, of historical buildings built of brick and stone.
Building the replica is painstaking work, but Ochsendorf thinks the process itself may be as valuable as the mechanics uncovered. For students of architecture and structural engineering, hands-on experience has largely given way to computer modelling. Techniques like 3D printing could be a way of reconnecting them with the craft behind the science, he says.
(New Scientist, 14.2 14.)
A) 3D printing a historical structure.
B) The benefits of 3D printing.
C) Computer modelling or hands-on experience?
D) A damaged cathedral is rebuilt.

Dear Simon,
I followed your daily lesson as well as your video lessons for one year which I found really helpful. I needed to get at least 7 in every skill and overall 7.5.Finally , I managed it last week.
I want to thank you for your marvelous website.
Best wishes

B is the answer, because 3D printing is helping them to measure safety and stability of damaged cathedral through replicating it.
A is not answer because a historical structure is not 3D printed but its model is build.
C is not answer because the passage implies 3D printing is overtaking / has overtaken the hands-on experience
D is not answer because a damaged cathedral is not rebuild but its small scale replica.
I hope I am right.

CORRECT ANSWER FROM SIMON:
A
The cathedral is the historic structure that they are making into a 3D-printed model.
Note:
B is too general - the text isn't really about the benefits of 3D printing - it's about a specific example of 3D printing.

Hi, i don't understand why correct answer is A.The first and second paragraphs mention that 3 D printing has several uses,so that i thought it means that they are its benefits.
But,i'm not sure.
Additionally,i want to say that my reading is the worst and i don't know how can i solve this problem.I almost did cambridge ielts books 1-6, and my best result was26.Generally,i did 22,23,25.

also i can find out keywords and related part of text properly,i just can't understand the correct meaning from that.Sometimes i know vocabulary, for example in this text i wrote b,even though most of words was known to me.Anyway,:D please give me some advice to improve my reading for two week.
Thank you very much in advance.

where can we see the correct answer?
Posted by: emma | July 19, 2015 at 07:37
FROM SIMON:
The correct answer was 'A'. I'll try to explain why in a bit more detail:
When choosing the title of a passage, we need to think about the overall purpose or message of the text. The passage in this case tells us about a 3D replica of a cathedral. Benefits are mentioned, but only in relation to this building and other similar building / engineering work. The benefits of 3D printing in general are not given: We don't learn about any other uses of 3D printing - we only learn about the cathedral replica, and possible similar applications.
I think it would be strange to have a title that doesn't in some way mention the cathedral replica or using 3D prinitng to replicate buildings.
The original article was all about 3D printing old buildings, not 3D printing's general benefits. Here's a link to the article:
https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22129564-000-ancient-structures-rebuilt-using-3d-printed-bricks/
Note:
Maybe the correct answer would have been clearer if I had included more of the article in the lesson above. I could have made the task less confusing!

Hello Simon, My first thought would have been to select Option A, However, The only reason I ruled it out to choosing B was because it limits the passage to 3D printing while we're obviously building a Replica. On the other hand Option B had benefits of 3D printing - which is covered more in the passage.
I don't know if thinking too much or too less is putting me in soup with Reading :(
