Dear Simon,

Please could I ask why you say 'in newspapers' , but not 'in the newspapers'? For me, there is only a limited number of newspapers available to the public. Or is it the same type of phrases like on TV, in which 'the' is not required?

Thank you

Sorry, I mean a limited number of types of newspapers such as 'Times', 'The Sun', 'Independence'.

Hi Jing,

You could also use "in the newspapers" and it would be almost the same. As you said, the word "the" just makes the idea a bit more specific i.e. a specific group of newspapers, such as the most well-known papers here in the UK.

Simon

Thank you so much for your explanation. I really appreciate it. I have learned a considerable amount of invaluable knowledge in English from you and all the materials you provide. I am very grateful for your help.

Best wishes

Hii Simon
M preparing for ielts exam I wanna ask u that is it necessary to use more and more vocabs in writing or speaking task??

Dear Simon,
Is it true that while speaking we should use as much redundant language and uncommon vocabulary as possible? Because I could reduce the amount of information in my speech a lot if I focus on those lengthy structure like "Well to be quite honest, in general I would say that I'm quite keen on..., but in particular I would probably have to say that I'm really into...you know, things like... I guess the reason why I'm a fan of... is because I adore ... In addition to this I suppose I'm also pretty passionate about..., especially... and things like that, and this is due to the fact that..." (assume that I'm trying to describe something that I like).
I look forward to hearing your response soon!
