1. True - originally intended primarily for attaching tickets to fabric
2. False - not considered reminiscent of the modern paper clip design known today.
3. Not Given - statement was simply not conveyed in the passage

Note:

1. Only patented for one specific purpose may otherwise be expressed as "originally intended primarily"
2. Fay's design was indeed practical. In addition, the word practical is not synonymous with the term reminiscent

On a second thought, I came to the conclusion:

1 - NOT GIVEN
(The text i saying that Fay's clip was, originally - at first, intended to be used "primarily for attaching tickets to fabric" - but it does not mention that such use was patented. "although the patent recognized that it could be used to attach papers together" - do not mean that it was only potented use.We can't use here our logical thinking.)

2 - NOT GIVEN
(Although functional and practical...are not considered reminiscent of the modern paper clip design known today
- They are not being compared in terms of practicality or usefulness, reminiscent = reminding, resembling)

3 - TRUE

CORRECT ANSWERS FROM SIMON:

1. False
2. Not given
3. True

Hello Simon,

Would you please explain these answers? It will be helpful for us.

FROM SIMON

Here are my explanations:

1)
"patented for one specific use" = FALSE BECAUSE TWO USES ARE MENTIONED: for attaching tickets to fabric...AND... to attach papers together.

2)
"Fay’s paper clip was not as practical as those we use today" = NOT GIVEN BECAUSE NO COMPARISON IS MADE WITH TODAY'S PAPER CLIPS IN TERMS OF HOW PRACTICAL THEY ARE.

3)
"Nobody has a patent on the paper clip that most people use today." TRUE BECAUSE THE PASSAGE SAYS: "The most common type of wire paper clip still in use, the Gem paper clip, was never patented."

hello Simon,

But the passage says,in the third sentence, the design was practical and functional... "Although functional and practical". So I thought answer for statement 2 is FALSE. I didn't get it, couldn't understand :(

Dear Simon,
I still can't get this.
Since in the text "Although functional and practical, Fay's design along with the 50 other designs patented prior to 1899 are not considered reminiscent of the modern paper clip design known today."", question 2 should be FALSE, I think !

1 false
2true 3 nt given

I would go with
F NG T.
How do we know what the correct answer is.
