By the way, do you think it's acceptable to use surpass in stead of overtake and as of 2012 instead of in 2012?

I'm looking forwards to your reply. Thank you!

@ James Z.

I think it is okay to use "surpass" or "exceed" instead of "overtake".

"as of 2012" means "till 2010", different from the meaning of "in 2010".

Open to discuss.

Hi Keddie Z.,

Thank you for your words. I searched the web a little while ago and found the use of 'as of' a bit complicated than I've thought, which is largely based on the verb tense in the same sentence. Here is the link of its usage:

http://www.learnersdictionary.com/qa/as-of-today

Therefore, I suppose we'd better not using it in IELTS writing to avoid making mistakes.

I have to correct myself for the second sentence. The answer should be 'went up' rather than 'rose'.

Went up. With
Saw the increase in
Revenue from
By far = very much

CORRECT ANSWERS FROM SIMON:

1. on
2. went
3. far
4. from, at
5. saw, in

James,

"as of 2012" means "from 2012 onwards". It doesn't mean "in 2012".

You might be able to use "surpass" in some situations, but I don't think I've ever used that word in a task 1 answer.

Thanks very much for your reply, Simon. Your explanation clears up my confusion!
