IELTS Speaking Part 1: 'name' answers

Here are some sample answers for the 'name' questions that I shared last week. Notice that most of these answers are negative ones; it's completely acceptable to answer in this way.

1) How did your parents choose your name?

To be honest, I'm not sure how they chose it; I've never asked them. I suppose it was just a name that they both liked, and maybe they thought it suited me.

2) Does your name have any special meaning?

It might do, but I don't know what that meaning is; I've never looked it up. Maybe I'll google it later today; you've made me curious to find out!

3) Is your name common or unusual in your country?

Yes, it's quite a common name. I remember that there were two other people with the same name as me in my class at school.

4) If you could change your name, would you?

No, I definitely wouldn't. My name is part of my identity now, and it would feel strange to suddenly change it. I don't think my friends and family would like that either.

Tomorrow, I am going to sit for IELTS exam in Hong Kong. Listening, Reading, and Writing. Speaking will be on the following day. Seeking your prayer.

I have been practicing for last 2 months seriously aiming for 7 in all parts individually. I followed only SIMON blog and Cambridge books (10, 9, 8, 5, 4, 3).

My weakest part was writing. I tried to practise more on writing, let us see what happens.

Hey Simon,

There were two other people with the same name as MINE or ME?

Could you give another example of this structure?

Good question. Both are fine, especially in spoken English. "The same name as mine" appears to be more logical from a grammatical point of view. However, it's probably more common to hear people say "the same ... as me" in everyday spoken English, where grammar rules are often broken!

How did your parents choose your name?
I was named after Dinka who is my Mom's favourite fictional character. And, of course, it was also the name that my parents both liked.

Does your name have any special meaning?
Yes, it means faithful and it comes from Arabic. I remember that I was a teenager when I was curious about it and found it out.

Is your name common or unusual in your country?
No, it's quite an unusual name. For example, I have only two acquaintances with the same name as mine.

If you could change your name, would you? Why/Why not?
No, I definitely wouldn't. But currently I'm living in China and Chinese people can't pronounce Dina correctly, so one could say that I have a new name here.
