Hi Simon
I had my LRW today
Writing question was..
Because computers can translate all languages very quickly and accurately, learning a foreign language is a waste of time . To what extend you agree or disagree ?

It is true that computers are able to translate languages very fastly with accuracy. I completely disagree with the opinion that learning a foreign language is just wasting valuable time.

Learning a foreign language is of immense of help of the individuals. First and foremost benefit is the effect of studying a foreign language in the cognitive development . Meaning that, when people start to learn a foreign that the neural substance in the brain get activated. For instance , studies indicate that children who have learnt foreign language are intellectually higher than the students who have not learnt it. Hence, it is quite evident that learning a foreign language is not a wastage of time.

Moreover, as world is getting globAlized it is important for people to learn to a foreign to communicate with foreigners. To illustrate people have to travel to different part of the world for various reasons like education , business, entertainment and in that situation foreign language learning certainly help them to communicate without a language barrier between people of diverse nation. For example, English is a foreign language which has been teaching in majority of countries for many years to tackle the problem of language barrier. In short , even if computers can translate languages it a good to learn a foreign language.

To conclude , I firmly believe that educating a foreign language is certainly a valuable thing although it is possible for computers to translate languages.

Can anyone. Pls evaluate it?

Hi simon

In my ielts test, when the reading section was over and the organiser asked us to put down our pencil and stop writing I did not do it immediately as he said and I stopped a few seconds (maybe 2 seconds not more) after he said. He just came to me and took my answer sheet in an angry way. I am afraid that I will get zero or some of my answers will not be counted. If it happens can I complain for remark? I am so sad. Please help me.

Hi Achu,

Well written. I am not an expert but one of you people. I could noticed following. I am sure those mistakes must not be in real exam but here just a typing mistake. I don't mean to offend you rather I mean to correct myself. I may be wrong in my way of correction.

In your write up......

It is true that computers are able to translate languages very fastly with accuracy ( it should be.... "fast and accurately".... parallelism)

..... when people start to learn a foreign (.... what foreign?... ambiguity) that the neural
substance in the brain

...... Studies indicate that children who have learnt foreign language ..... ( I am not sure, but I have read somewhere that we should not mention about study or research in IELTS essay... I respected guides are here to correct me)

.... and in that situation foreign language learning certainly help them to communicate without... ( helps... not help.. , subject verb parallelism)

To illustrate people have to travel to different part of the world for various reasons ( different parts, ... not part)

... help them to communicate without a language barrier between ( I think article "a" should not be there, I am not sure)

.. English is a foreign language which has been teaching in majority of ( coma before which.... you have missed that)

... In short , even if computers can translate languages it a good to learn a foreign language. (... it is good .... verb is missed in your writing and "a good" is not the correct word... you can use article 'a' in case something like.... a good number, a good position etc)

Any correction is welcome.

All the best Achu.

Hi Shilpa

Hi Shilpa
I have a query about the pattern that I have to follow in the agree disagree type question, because still I m not sure about the agree disagree type question

Is this the right way to write the question

Pedram

Don't worry, nothing will happen to you.

Achu,

Clear your confusion regarding pattern by following this blog lessons posted by respected Simon sir on 26 April and 19th April. My idea about this type of essay is very clear after reading that.

Shilpa

Dear Simon,
Why do the Task questions carry the tag "Do you agree or disagree?" while some others have "To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

Are we supposed to answer these differently?

One more doubt:
If the question does not ask your opinion, but you write the opinion anyway, will it a problem?

thank you.

Anraj

'Do you agree or disagree?' and 'To what extent do you agree or disagree?' are exactly the same.

If the question is not an opinion question (for example a problem/solution essay) then you do not need to give an opinion. However, it is actually a good idea to give a 'comment' on what you identify, such as saying the problems are 'serious' and the solutions are 'possible'. There is nothing wrong with giving an opinion, but it shouldn't be the focus of the essay.

Hi Sjm,

Thank you for reassuring words. However, his behaviour made me so nervous and could not concentrate anymore on writing and speaking parts. Although I make a big effort during the past 9 months for preparation of IELTS, I totally lost my confidence after his harsh behaviour. Even after the exam he said he will cross some of my answers. I was so disappointed! I had travelled about 12 hours to go to the IELTS centre and I spent alot of money and time to do this test and everything was ruined by his behaviour. I wish the course organisers knew how to behave candidates!

Hi Simon!! I am done with my exam and I would like to thank you for your amazing website. It definitely helped me. You are genius! Thank you and more power!!

No problem Charley. I'm glad my lessons helped you!

Hi Simon
Today I received my results overal 7.5 listening 7.5 reading 7 speaking 7 writing 6.5. Hope I can achieve 7 for writing within a few attempts. My score was 6 for many tests and it increased to 6.5 only when I have started to follow your lessons. Thank you so much Simon. Ur lessons are really worth full .
