Read the following excerpt from a newspaper article about the effects of humans on wild animals.
Humans are driving mammals including deer, tigers and bears to hide under the cover of darkness, jeopardising the health of the creatures that are only supposed to be active by day, new research his found. The presence of people can instil strong feelings of fear in animals and as human activities now cover 75 per cent of the land, we are becoming increasingly harder to avoid. Unable to escape during the day, mammals are forced to emerge during the night.
A team led by Kaitlyn Gaynor at the University of California, Berkeley arrived at this conclusion after analysing nearly 80 studies from six continents that monitored the activity of various mammals using GPS trackers and motion-activated cameras. The scientists used this data to assess the night time antics of the animals during periods of low and high human disturbance.
Such disturbances ranged from relatively harmless activities like hiking to overtly destructive ones like hunting, as well as larger scale problems like farming and road construction. Overall, the researchers concluded that from beavers to lions, there was an increase in nocturnal behaviour when humans were in the vicinity.

CORRECT ANSWERS FROM SIMON:
1. nocturnal
2. tracking
3. disturbance
4. agriculture
5. emerge
Note: Many people got number 4 wrong. The correct answer (agriculture) is a synonym of 'farming', and the gap is part of a list: from hiking to farming (agriculture) to road building.
'hunt' is wrong because "hiking to hunt" makes it look as if hikers are going hunting. The word 'hunting' would work, but this isn't one of the choices.
'construction' is wrong because we already have the word 'building'.

Hi every one,
I have two questions as below:
Fisrt one is about grammar, in the above Reading test, we have a sentence: " Humans are driving ..., new research his found". Why did we use" his found" her? I would believe that we need a subject rather than a possesive pronoun.
Another question is the meaning of the phrase: " the night time antics". What does this phrase mean?
Could anyone help me clarify these two?
Thanks in advance.

My strategy is to find the correct form of words to fill those gap first, then find the key words in the passage.
A recent study has shown that many mammals are being forced to become __(Adj)____ due to the presence of humans. Scientists reached these findings by _(a gerund -ing)_ and analysing the movements of mammals in areas with different levels of _(Noun)__. They showed that human activities, ranging from hiking to __(Noun/ gerund -ing)____ to road building, made it more likely that mammals would __(Verb)____ at night.
@Huy Luu: I would almost 100% agree with your answers, apart from the word 'hunting'. In fact, the question provided 'hunt' instead of 'hunting'. I guess we should use 'agriculture' since the passage did mention 'farming' together with 'hiking' and 'road construction' among those human activities affecting mammals .
My answer is as follows:
A recent study has shown that many mammals are being forced to become__nocturnal__due to the presence of humans. Scientists reached these findings by __tracking__and analyzing the movements of mammals in areas with different levels of __disturbance__. They showed that human activities, ranging from hiking to __agriculture__ to road building, made it more likely that mammals would __emerge__at night.

Hi teacher Simon.
In your quick guide videos about reading, you said Gap-fill question type in reading tasks are normally in order. But to be honest, I found lots of examples in Cambridge series (7-12) where the answers weren't in order, like IELTS 7 (Academic module), Test 3, passage 1. How can I cope with such questions and what's your suggestion? I would lose my time if answers weren't in order.
Thanks a lot in advance.
Posted by: Elma | July 16, 2018 at 16:41
Hi Elma,
I've also seen gap-fill summary sections where not all of the answers can be found in order in the passage. It's usually just one question that isn't in order, or you find that the summary jumps back to information from near the beginning of the passage.
The only solution seems to be this:
Assume that answers are usually in order in the passage, BUT be aware that this 'rule' is occasionally broken for gap-fill sections. So, search for answers in order first, but if you don't find an answer, go back to the beginning of the passage and check there.
Another tip: If you can't find an answer when reading the passage 'in order', miss that question, finish everything else, and then return to the tricky question at the end if you have time.

Hi again.
Thanks for your prompt reply. By the way, last night I watched a video (how to be successful in IELTS in just 30 days), in that episode, the narrator said that IELTS Cambridge series questions are more complex than real exam. Is it true? Do you agree with such expression? If that quote was true, I could boost my self-esteem indeed. :)
Thanks.

Hi Simon thanks for ur cooperation,
I think,
Number 5 is Active.
"made it more(increse)likely that mammals would emerge at night"
This line very similar with
"was an increase in nocturnal behaviour when humans were in the vicinity".
Posted by: Anwar | November 27, 2018 at 06:06
For the ones who think Number 5 should be "Active".
For gap-filling questions grammar as well as word forming such as Capital letters should be followed.
...mammals would emerge at night. (correct)
...mammals would active at night. (wrong)
but
...mammals would BE active at night (would be correct)
