A student asked me to look at the following task, which comes from Cambridge IELTS book 6 (test 2).
The table below gives information about changes in modes of travel in England between 1985 and 2000.
Quick task: What main or general trends would you choose for your overview paragraph? Think about how to summarise the information.
Hi Simon,
Here is my guess.
Two main trends observed from the given table:
+ the total travelling distance increased over the period.
+ cars were the most used mode of transport in both years.
It is clear from the table that the total distance of a person travelled rose significantly over a 15-year period. Cars were responsible for the longest distance travelled in both 1985 and 2000.

Overall, the average distance travelled by an Englishman increased from 4,740 miles in 1985 to 6,475 miles in 2000. In both years, the most popular way of travelling was by car.

Avoid putting exact numbers in the overview. The overview is for the general trends, not the specific information (we call specific numbers 'key features').

It is clear that car is by far the most popular mode of transport over the 15-year period. IT is also noticeable that figure for overall commuters increased in 2000, the popularity of travelling by taxi in English people has also increased significantly in 2000 compared to 1985.

It is obvious that most people relied on cars as their main transportation for travelling in the year 1985 and 2000. We can also find that walking, bicycle and local bus were the three categories that became less popular among residents in England over the year.

Overall, the average distance traveled rose by over a third, with car travel accounting for the lion's share in both years. The distance traveled on local buses, which made up less than a tenth of the total in 1985, shrank further in both raw and percentage terms.

Owerall, it can be observed increasing tendency in modes of travel such as car, taxi and long distance buses. And using other types of traveling, namely bicycle and buses around the area decreased over the given years

Madin
"It can be observed" is usually followed by "that".
"increasing tendency": (with a few exceptions) passive verbs do not take an object in English, so what is this? It cannot be the subject as we already have "it" as the subject.
Do not confuse "tendency" with "trend".
